Archaeological Museum of Thebes opened.

This Tuesday, June 7th, the one square kilometer-large Archeological Museum of Thebes re-opened after being closed for a few years. The museum has gotten such a total makeover that it is being re-named «The New Thebes Archeological Museum».


The museum is organized into 18 thematic units, 11 of which will tell the chronological story of Thebes and Boeotia (the region surrounding Thebes) from the Paleolithic Age, which ended 10,000 years ago, right up to the establishment of the modern Greek state. Presented are Boeotia's culture, daily life, politics, and social development .


There are special displays detailing the history of the museum and of Thebes, and Boeotia in mythology, as well as the spiritual life of Boeotia, especially the tragedies of the Theban mythological cycle.


Present at the dedication was the President of the Republic, Mr. Prokopis Pavlopoulos, and the Minister of Culture, Mr. Aristides Baltas. Also present was the Archbishop of Athens and all of Greece, Jerome.

Following a tour of the museum, and a reception in the museum's courtyard, there was a musical event, opened to the public, entitled «7 Women Sing for the Thebes Museum».
