DIONYSOS PERIKIONIOS
We know little about this Boeotian custom concerning Dionysos, the God of wine. A few lines from a scholiast of Euripides' Phoenician Women and a reference in the Orphic Hymn to Dionysos is all we have. And it seems that an old custom of an idol driven into the soil (Dionysos "endendros" / Dionysos in the form of a tree) and surrounded by ivy came to be represented in later times as a mask of the bearded God on top of a pillar surrounded with ivy (Dionysos Perikionios or Stylos).

ΔΙΟΝΥΣΟΣ ΠΕΡΙΚΙΟΝΙΟΣ
Γι αυτό το βοιωτικό έθιμο λίγα γνωρίζουμε. Από έναν ύστερο σχολιασμό στις Φοίνισσες του Ευριπίδη και από τον Ορφικό Ύμνο στον Διόνυσο. Και φαίνεται πως από παλιά ένα μπηγμένο είδωλο στο χώμα (Διόνυσος ένδενδρος) περιβεβλημένο από κισσούς κατέληξε να παριστάνεται αργότερα με μιά μάσκα του γενειοφόρου θεού πάνω σε μία στήλη με κισσούς (Διόνυσος Περικιόνιος ή Στύλος).
